Latest news on the Inter-Korean railway

23 Feb 2005 South Korean Unification Minister says they plan to finish connecting an inter-Korean railroad on the east coast by the end of the year to support the Mt. Kumgang tourism project.

2 Jul 2004 The 2 Koreas agree at Mt Kumgang to complete designs for the railway stations on the DPRK side of the DMZ by September. South Korea also agreed to provide lampposts and road signs for roads in both sections across the border.

6 Jun 2004 Inter-Korean economic talks in Pyongyang result in an agreement to open cross-border roads and make test runs on the two railways across the DMZ in Oct 2004.

8-10 Apr 2004 The 2 Koreas reach an agreement in Kaesong on the trans-DMZ train operations. The 16-clause agreement includes details on the operation schedule, the wireless communications, and the formation of a joint committee.

8 Mar 2004 South Korean Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun visits the construction site of the railway across the DMZ, and the adjacent road.

3 Mar 2004 At Inter-Korean economic talks in Seoul, the two Koreas agree to reconnect a cross-border road by first half of this year, and to conduct test runs of trains on completed railway sections in the western and eastern parts of the border by the end of this year. South Korea proposed a symbolic ceremony to re-connect the western road, timed to coincide with June's 4th anniversary of the historic Inter-Korean summit in 2000. KCNA reports they 'agreed to open to traffic a trial train service in the feasible railway sections between Onjong-ri and Jojin on the east coast and between Kaesong and Munsan on the west coast at the first phase within this year and finish the projects of paving the roads on the east and west coasts at the earliest possible date.'

2 Mar 2004 South Korean officials say the South Korean military has resumed work on relinking the Inter-Korean railway and its adjacent road on the east coast.

25-26 Feb 2004 The two Koreas have railway talks in Kaesong, just North of the DMZ. They adopt an agreement on the provision of maintenance service for the railroads, the establishment of an asphalt factory, and the provision of materials for reconnection of the railroads.

7 Jan 2004 Russia announces it will start repairing a 65km stretch of DPRK railway that would connect South Korea with the Trans-Siberian railway. Moscow says that during 2003 it has already spent US$16m on railway surveys in the DPRK, and modernised the 240km stretch to connect the Korean border with its Trans-Siberian railway network.

1 Jan 2004 In its joint new year editorial in the 3 main DPRK newspapers, Pyongyang calls for the development of railway transport to 'inject dynamism in the overall economy'.
